Online feedback opportunities to support student learning

November 7, 2017 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

November 7, 2017
10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Mariana Jardim, Faculty Liaison, Teaching, Learning & Technology
Diane Michaud, Faculty Liaison, Teaching, Learning & Technology
Maryam Shafiei, Faculty Liaison, Technology

Prerequisite: Have attended the Getting Started: Building a Portal Course workshop or have equivalent proficiency using Blackboard (i.e., can create assignments in Blackboard and are comfortable navigating the Grade Center or Portal courses in general).

Providing feedback to learners is believed crucial in supporting knowledge and skill acquisition. Yet, it can be challenging to give feedback in the time and space allotted for classes, and especially difficult to provide individualized feedback. This 2 hour, hands-on session will describe educational technology tools that can facilitate the provision of focused and specific feedback to students. It will demonstrate how to leverage additional features of your Portal course to provide formative individualized feedback.

Participants in this workshop will be able to:

  • Add focused comments on text assignments using the inline grading and feedback to learner options
  • Create a class FAQ-style discussion board
  • Provide comments on blogs, journals and discussion boards in the Portal
  • Create a rubric in their Portal course
  • Send email reminders (in one move) to all students who have not submitted work by the due date
  • Identify other feedback approaches and tools
