GenAI Reading Group: “Epistemic Agency and Knowledge-Building AI”
June 4 @ 1:10 pm - 2:00 pm EDT
Join us for our monthly reading group exploring generative AI in teaching and learning contexts. This is an informal discussion space for faculty, staff, and educational developers to engage with current research on GenAI in higher education. This event is hosted on the CTSI GenAI in Teaching and Learning Commons Teams Channel.
This Month's Reading:
Woodruff, E., & Hewitt, J. (2026). Epistemic Agency in the Age of Large Language Models: Design Principles for Knowledge-building AI. AI, 7(3), 99
This article argues that LLMs should function as knowledge-building partners rather than epistemic authorities. Woodruff and Hewitt demonstrate that LLM outputs lack key conditions for knowledge: reflective regulation, resistance to revision, and normative commitment. The authors propose design principles that preserve human responsibility for reflective control and epistemic regulation, while leveraging AI's strengths in pattern detection and hypothesis generation.
How to Join:
- Read what you can of the article beforehand - no formal preparation required
- Bring your thoughts, questions, and reactions - all perspectives and levels of GenAI experience welcome
Join the CTSI GenAI in Teaching and Learning Commons Teams Channel: Open Microsoft Teams → "Join or create a team" → "Join a team with a code" → Enter code: 5uztctq
Participants are welcome to join the Teams Channel to stay connected with future sessions and ongoing discussions about GenAI in teaching and learning.
