SoTL Series 2 – Situating SoTL: An Overview of Research Paradigms for Studying Teaching and Learning
February 20 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm EST
Presented by: RGASC, UTM
This workshop invites our teaching and learning community to explore different research paradigms available for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) projects. The goal of this workshop is to provide a comprehensive overview of foundational research worldviews and their practical implications for research inquiries in teaching and learning. Participants will be invited to reflect on how their discipline, research questions, and epistemological commitments shape their research choices and why these choices matter for conducting meaningful scholarship in teaching and learning. This workshop is intended for faculty, instructors, and educational staff at all stages of SoTL engagement, whether new to pedagogical research or looking to expand their methodological toolkit.
Learning Outcomes:
After this session, participants will:
· Explore different research paradigm(s) most aligned with their teaching inquiry, considering both their disciplinary background and their specific research question.
· Apply insights from the workshop to draft or refine a research question aligned with their research paradigm of choice.
