Tune into Teaching: “Can I use this content in this tool?”: Navigating the Nuances of Copyright and Generative AI

“Can I use this content in this tool?” — when it comes to GenAI, answering this question is harder than it seems. Legal and policy frameworks governing these tools are full of grey areas and subject to ongoing change, creating real challenges for instructors trying to navigate lawful use. This workshop introduces key questions that arise when integrating GenAI tools into teaching, with a focused discussion on copyright and licensing using case studies to ground the conversation. 
Participants will leave with a clearer understanding of the copyright and licensing concerns governing GenAI use, and the library resources available to support them. 
Along the way, participants will become familiar with: 
• U of T best practices for open and closed GenAI tools, including the suitability of different content types in each environment 
• Key copyright and licensing terminology — rights, obligations, and what these mean for instructors and students 
• Answers to common AI copyright and licensing questions
