Typical Course Format?
Most tools in the Academic Toolbox can assist in both online and face-to-face courses. Many tools can provide benefits in either synchronous or asynchronous teaching. Some tools have been primarily designed for one format or another (synchronous/asynchronous), however, may be adapted for any format depending on your pedagogical goals.

Upload Videos to MS Stream
Upload Videos to MS Stream
- Access MS Stream from your O365 apps or via https://web.microsoftstream.com (Links to an external site.)
- To upload a video, select + Create on the menu at the top left > Upload Video
- Drag a video to the screen or browse to upload.
- Add the Title, Description, Video Language and Thumbnail on the Details tab.
- Choose sharing settings on the Permissions tab. You can leave the video private, share with anyone at the university, or add specific people who can view the recording.
- Under the Options tab, set ability to comment and generate auto captions.
- Comments – allow comments on videos
- Noise suppression – isolate speech from other sounds and music during playback
- Closed Captioning – select to auto-generate captions. For more information about generating and editing captions, please refer to the consult Exploring and Captioning Transcription Tools on the Quercus Video and Workshop Recordings page or Captions in MS Stream pdf.
- The pink bar at the top will indicate the Processing status of your video which could take a varying amount of time depending on video length- you do not need to wait for this to complete. Feel free to navigate away or close the tab – you will be sent an email when your video has been processed.
- When you are satisfied with the settings, select Publish

Access your Videos and change video details by going back to the top menu and selecting My Content > Videos . Select a file name to view or edit the video. If you have generated captions, they will be available with the recording.

Share a Video on MS Stream
MS Stream has limited sharing options. You can:
- Share with anyone at U of T
- Share with specific individuals who need to be added one-by-one.
If you need to share a video with a class, a better option may be to host on the University of Toronto Library’s MyMedia hosting platform. If you need captions, you will still need to use MS Stream to generate them, then upload the caption file to MyMedia.

To share a video from MS Stream:
Select the Share icon.
- Share in Quercus or other Location: Select Share to get a link that can be copied. Sharing will depend on the privacy options that have been selected.
- Share an Email: select the Share button under your video to create a URL, send the video out as an email, or copy an embed code.
- Embed Video: Select Embed to copy the embed code, to insert into a website. Sharing will depend on the privacy options that have been selected.
