April 24th SoTL Journal Club

The CTSI-SoTL team is excited to continue the monthly Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Journal Club Series through Fall-Winter 2022-23. The goal of this series is to provide an opportunity for our community to explore the SoTL literature in a group setting, both to find practical applications to implement in the classroom and to inform our own SoTL projects.
Articles in this series are selected by instructors within our SoTL community, and these papers are a starting point to explore and examine one research study. Facilitators provide discussion prompts to guide and engage us in conversations that will resonate across all disciplines and SoTL experience levels.

Please note that while this study was undertaken in craft education, our facilitators will be using it as a springboard for a broader conversation on the impact of generative AI on education.
Discussion Prompts:
- The article serves as a case study and a springboard for us to discuss generative AI and its broader impact on education. It may be helpful for us to discuss similar questions: What part of the pedagogy and assessment in your discipline can be automated? What can't be automated? What should not be automated?
- When incorporating AI in teaching practices, how do we delineate human agency in the human/AI collaborative process, and prevent learning loss stemming from the “low floor” nature of AI tools?
- Considering the methods in this paper (i.e., creative making of artifacts + discussions + thematic analysis), do you see any limitations, and how would you address them?
Considering your own teaching context, what research question might you have about generative AI and teaching?
