Course Instructor Training Camp – April 2026 (Online)

This training consists of two parts:
• Seven asynchronous learning modules (3.5 hours)
• Two synchronous online workshop sessions (2.5 hours total). 
You must complete the 7 asynchronous modules before youcan attend the workshops (see self-enrolment links below). 
For the synchronous sessions, participants are expected tobe present online for the full duration of each session. 
Part 1: Asynchronous Modules
The asynchronous modules focus on many of theprinciple components of course design, including learning outcomes,assessments, syllabus design, and lecture planning. They additionally highlighthow these components are informed by UDL (Universal Design for Learning) andEquity-Oriented Pedagogy. We also discuss policies and course administrationdetails that are specific to the University of Toronto. The content covered inthese modules is applicable to face-to-face, hybrid, and online learningcontexts.
Upon completion of the asynchronous modules, you will beable to:
• List the fundamental principles of course design
• Apply the principles of Universal Design for Learning to your course design
• Create courses that reduce barriers to learning and foster an inclusive environment
• Develop effective, well-designed courses and lectures that engage your students
• Design a learner-centered syllabus that fosters student resilience
• Describe considerations for equity related to all aspects of course development
• Outline and implement University policies and administration concerning your course design and delivery
 Part 2: Online Workshops
2. Syllabus Peer Review + Q & A: Participants will receive feedback on their course syllabus and provide feedback to one of their peers. This activity will help participants identify areas of strength and potential areas for improvement in their syllabus. For this reason, we require participants to bring a draft of a syllabus – it does not have to be a finished or polished draft and can be for a course you have taught before, a course you are about to teach, or a course you would like to teach in the future. The first synchronous session will also include time for a question-and-answer period, where participants are welcome to ask questions about concepts introduced in the asynchronous modules, or other aspects of course design. The first synchronous session will be 1.5 hours long.
4. Effective Practices for Engaging Lectures: This session focuses on how CIs can deliver engaging and equitable lectures. We explore three key areas, including inclusive lecturing, active learning, and reflective practice. We will discuss strategies that are relevant in both face-to-face and online learning contexts, and we will consider these strategies with accessibility and inclusivity in mind. The second synchronous session will be 1 hour long.
