Some Quercus (Canvas) features and functionality are optional or new and can be toggled on or off by instructors in their courses, as covered in the Canvas feature option guide.
This page provides a list of feature options that can be managed at the course level, with brief descriptions of each. Some feature options will appear in your course, but their status cannot be changed. These have been locked on or off for all Quercus courses and will not be listed here.

Anonymous Instructor Annotations
Default status: Off
Anonymous instructor annotations Canvas documentation.
- Allows annotation comments made directly on documents in SpeedGrader to be anonymous.
- After enabling the feature, a setting for anonymous annotations will appear in all Assignments.
- The setting must be selected for the Assignment before any comments are made. Existing comments will not be anonymized if the setting is enabled after comments have been added.
- Does not apply to comments added to the main Comment box in SpeedGrader.
Disable Classic Quiz Creation
Default status: Off
- When enabled, Classic Quizzes can no longer be created in the course; New Quizzes becomes the only option for creating a quiz.
- Existing Classic Quizzes are not removed and can still be edited, imported, and migrated to New Quizzes.
Emojis in Submission Comments
Default status: On
Submission Comments Canvas documentation.
- Adds an emoji picker to the comment box used for Assignment submission comments.
- Available to both instructors and students once enabled.
Enhanced Rubrics
Default status: On
Enhanced Rubrics Canvas documentation.
- Updates the rubric creation, viewing and editing interface.
- Adds the ability to search, sort, duplicate and archive rubrics.
- Allows instructors to view the courses and Assignments where a specific Rubric has been used.
Learning Mastery Gradebook
Default status: Off
Learning Mastery Gradebook Canvas documentation.
- For courses using Outcomes, this feature provides a gradebook view organized by learning outcomes instead of by assignment.
- The traditional Gradebook view remains as an option that can be selected.
- Outcomes must be created and aligned with course content before results will appear.
Student Learning Mastery Gradebook
Default status: Off

- Lets students view their own scores against course outcomes in their Grades page.
- Only visible to students if the Learning Mastery Gradebook feature is also enabled for the course.
New Quizzes
Default status: Off
New Quizzes Canvas documentation.
- Adds New Quizzes as an option alongside Classic Quizzes when creating a quiz.
- Includes question types not available in Classic Quizzes, such as Categorization, Hot Spot, Ordering, and Stimulus content.
- Classic Quizzes remain usable and are not automatically converted when this feature is enabled.
Preserve Group Set During Assignment or Discussion Copy
Default status: Off
- When a group Assignment or Discussion is copied to another course, e.g. during a course copy, a new Group Set with the same name is created in the destination course if no matching Set exists.
- Without this feature, copied group Assignments are linked to an existing matching group set or default to an automatically created “Project Groups” set.
- The feature must be enabled in the destination course before the content is copied.
RCE Studio Embed Improvements
Default status: On
- The University of Toronto does not use Canvas Studio, and this feature has no impact on courses.
