GenAI Reading Group: “Student Perspectives on GenAI in Higher Ed”

Join us for our monthly reading group exploring generative AI in teaching and learning contexts. This is an informal discussion space for faculty, staff, and educational developers to engage with current research on GenAI in higher education. This event is hosted on the CTSI GenAI in Teaching and Learning Commons Teams Channel.  
This Month’s Reading: 
Chung, J., et al. (2026) The use and usefulness of GenAI in higher education: Student experience and perspectives (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2666557326000182). Computers and Education, 100347. 
This article argues that students engage with GenAI as a pragmatic tool to be managed and verified, not trusted outright; usefulness drives adoption, not trust or rules. Drawing on a large survey of Australian university students, the authors find that nearly half use GenAI regularly and feel competent with it, despite doubting its accuracy, driven mainly by convenience rather than grades. The authors argue that institutions should replace policing with support for critical, self-directed engagement, since students mostly learn about GenAI on their own.
