Gradescope

Gradescope is an online assessment and grading platform that supports paper-based, online, and programming assessments. Instructors can grade collaboratively using rubrics, provide feedback, manage regrade requests, and analyze student performance. Its integration with Quercus allows instructors to connect courses and assignments and synchronize assessment information.

Before You Begin

Gradescope is a divisionally selected tool and is not automatically available in every Quercus course. Access must be approved by the relevant division on a course-by-course basis and renewed each semester.

Each division establishes its own policies and practices for using Gradescope, including assessment administration, licensing, and funding. Gradescope has a per-student-per-course licensing cost that is managed by the division.

To request access, contact your divisional representative. If you are unsure whom to contact, email q.help@utoronto.ca for assistance identifying the appropriate representative.

The approval and activation process is as follows:

  1. The instructor contacts their divisional representative to discuss the proposed use of Gradescope.
  2. If approved, the divisional representative works with Gradescope to complete the necessary contracting and licensing arrangements.
  3. Once arrangements are complete, the divisional representative contacts the central Quercus Help team to enable the integration for the course.

Note: Since May 11, 2026, instructors and students access Gradescope through their Quercus courses rather than signing in directly through the Gradescope website.

Accessing Gradescope Through Quercus

Once Gradescope has been approved and enabled for your course, you can access it through Quercus:

  1. In your Quercus course, select Assignments.
  2. Open the … (ellipsis) menu and select Gradescope.
  3. Follow the prompts to connect to an existing Gradescope course or create a new Gradescope course.

Account Email Matching and Merging

Gradescope uses your default Quercus email address to identify your account.

If you previously created a Gradescope account using a different email address, your existing courses may not appear when you access Gradescope through Quercus.

To resolve this issue, follow Gradescope’s instructions for merging accounts. This is only necessary if your Quercus email differs from the email address used to create your Gradescope account before May 2026.

Creating and Linking Assignments

Gradescope assignments are initiated through the Assignments area in Quercus. Once you have connected your Gradescope course, follow the prompts to create or link assignments.

Important: Assignment titles, due dates, and section assignments synchronize in one direction, from Quercus to Gradescope. Changes to these settings must be made in Quercus, as changes made directly in Gradescope will not synchronize back to Quercus.

For detailed instructions, consult Gradescope’s guide, Creating and Linking Your Assignments.

Additional Information and Support

For technical instructions and troubleshooting, consult Gradescope’s Instructor Guides, Student Guides, and Troubleshooting resources.

Additional guidance is available from the Faculty of Arts & Science through its Gradescope in A&S resource.
