When we design our courses, we invest a lot of effort and resources into planning what we want our students to learn (i.e. the learning objectives), how to deliver that content in class, and how to create assessments that will help students develop and demonstrate their understanding of the material. Sometimes we take for granted that our students will be able to effectively use course materials and their time in class. We may not ask ourselves, or, just as importantly, our students, if there are gaps in their academic skills that might create barriers to their success (e.g., do they know how to take effective notes during class?).

In this session, participants will explore examples of resources that were part of the ACUE course that targeted note-taking skills. Participants will learn how these tools were built upon to support note-taking in an active learning context and will explore additional tools developed to support disciplinary reading and writing skills, including some data collected that indicates their effectiveness. There will also be time for discussion about skill development strategies in a variety of contexts and disciplines.

Our faculty facilitators in this lunch series have completed 25 modules and earned the Certificate in Effective University Instruction offered by the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE) in partnership with CTSI.
