SoTL Series 5 – Qualitative Research Methods in SoTL

This workshop will introduce our teaching and learning community to data collection and analysis strategies in qualitative research for SoTL. The session will first cover the foundations of crafting effective interview and focus group protocols in support of ethically engaging with students during qualitative research data collection. Next, participants will explore commonly used qualitative methodologies such as thematic analysis, narrative inquiry, and phenomenology, supplemented with examples of SoTL studies from each. The session will also highlight a faculty-led qualitative SoTL project from UTM and will feature student research assistants sharing their experiences with pedagogical qualitative research. This workshop is intended for faculty, instructors, and educational staff who are new to SoTL or are interested in learning about qualitative research methods in pedagogical research.
Learning Outcomes:
After this session, participants will:
· Discuss and design effective interview and focus group protocols that ethically engage students in qualitative SoTL research.
· Explore commonly used qualitative methodologies in SoTL, including thematic analysis, narrative inquiry, and phenomenology.
· Explore the logistics and practical realities of running a qualitative SoTL research project.
