Reconciliation in Practice

Reconciliation in Practice

Faculty Facilitator: Sarah Peirce, Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, Department of Earth Sciences, Faculty of Arts & Science
Staff Facilitator: Samantha Chang, Educational Developer, Teaching, Learning & Technology, CTSI

Reconciliation in Practice is a monthly professional learning series that offers a reflective, supportive space for faculty and staff who wish to engage more meaningfully with reconciliation in their teaching, research, service, and daily practices. Each month, participants explore a concrete, accessible strategy drawn from reconciliation-focused resources and scholarship, supporting both reflection and action.

Sessions explore themes such as learning Indigenous histories, building respectful relationships, challenging colonial habits, and integrating reconciliation into professional and personal contexts. While open to all, the series is especially supportive of non-Indigenous faculty and staff who are seeking to build understanding, reflect with humility, and take ongoing action in respectful and responsible ways.

This is a non-judgmental learning space grounded in curiosity, humility, and care.

Learning Outcomes

By participating in this learning community, members will be able to:

  • Engage with reconciliation as an ongoing personal and professional practice informed by Indigenous and settler perspectives.
  • Reflect on their roles and responsibilities within academic and institutional contexts.
  • Apply reconciliation strategies to their own contexts (e.g., teaching, collaboration, mentorship, governance).
  • Build capacity for relational accountability, humility, and allyship in their work.
  • Participate in a community of practice that supports sustained and evolving learning.

Community Approach

Participants agree to approach this work with humility, accountability, respect, and reflection.

The community recognizes reconciliation as a long-term relational process involving both inner work and outward change—in classrooms, committees, collaborations, and daily practice.

Upcoming Reconciliation in Practice Sessions

The community meets online on the last Friday of each month from 12:10–1 pm.
