Themed Workshop Request: Generative AI

Themed Workshop Request: Generative AI

The University of Toronto recognizes the transformative potential of generative AI (GenAI) in higher education and is committed to supporting its responsible integration into teaching and learning practices. To support this strategic priority, the Centre for Teaching Support & Innovation (CTSI) is offering a series of themed workshops for U of T instructors – designed to equip educators with the knowledge, tools, and practical strategies needed to navigate generative AI in their teaching contexts. Together, these sessions invite participants to critically examine AI’s implications for learning outcomes and assessment design, explore U of T’s institutionally supported AI tools, and engage in evidence-informed dialogue about the evolving role of generative AI in higher education.

Please note that CTSI requires a minimum of 1 month’s notice to book a workshop. This is to ensure we have time to identify CTSI facilitators and prepare the session.

Topic 1

Revisiting Learning Outcomes in the Age of GenAI

This interactive workshop invites participants to revisit course-level learning outcomes in light of generative AI – considering where AI might support student learning, where it shouldn’t, and what that means for the human-centred skills and disciplinary knowledge we most want students to develop. The session also explores implications for assessment design.

Topic 2

Adapting Assessments with GenAI in Mind

This hands-on workshop focuses on practical, AI-aware assessment design. Participants will explore strategies ranging from building assessments that are resistant to AI overreliance, to developing tasks that intentionally leverage generative AI tools in support of student learning.

Topic 3

Orientation to Cogniti: AI with Educational Guardrails

This workshop introduces Cogniti, U of T’s platform for creating course-specific AI tutors grounded in your content and deployed directly in Quercus. Participants will explore how to customize an AI tutor, guide students toward productive learning conversations, and monitor engagement – all within a platform built with safeguards for student wellbeing and learning.

Topic 4

GenAI in Teaching: Reading & Discussion

A facilitated discussion built around a pre-circulated reading on generative AI in teaching and learning, drawn from CTSI’s GenAI Reading Group. The session creates space to collectively unpack ideas and implications for practice; a good fit for departments where close reading and text-based inquiry are central.
