U of T students come from 170 countries and regions (U of T Quick Facts, 2022), with 32% speaking a language other than English at home (Student Life, 2023). How can we leverage diverse language skills to cultivate inclusive learning environments and foster belonging? This session examines the intersection between languages and communication with accessibility, intercultural competencies, and asset-based pedagogies. In doing so, we consider the power of languages and communication in reconstructing learning spaces and identities and identify strategies to remove barriers and foster belonging in our culturally and linguistically diverse community.
Learning Outcomes:
- Examine key principles and approaches of inclusive languages and communication informing pedagogies and practices in the classroom
- Investigate language and communication strategies for removing barriers, empowering learners, and amplifying learning in your courses
- Discuss how inclusive languages and communication can align with Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and reinforce ongoing work in anti-racist/anti-oppressive education.
