Description:
Chemistry is an increasingly data-intensive discipline, with computation and data science being integral parts of many research activities. Updating our undergraduate curriculum to integrate these skills is essential to prepare our students for modern graduate-level research, and to be competitive in the current job market. In 2022, faculty in the Departments of Chemistry and Computer Science began a multi-year initiative to develop a cohesive and scaffolded programming pedagogy across multiple environmental chemistry courses. In this presentation we will discuss the evolution of our approach to the teaching and learning of computer code in a chemistry context and present the results of surveys and semi-structured interviews meant to assess the affective experience of students learning to use, edit, and write computer code in our chemistry courses.
