CTSI Equity Roundtable – The Equitable Classroom is a Therapeutic Landscape: Leveraging the Meaning of Mindful Meditation
April 25 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm EDT
Facilitators:
Leanne De Souza-Kenney, Assistant Professor, Human Biology, FAS
Jasjit Sangha, Faculty Liaison Coordinator, Anti-Racist Pedagogies, CTSI
In this session, we will explore the utility of mindful meditation in the pursuit of building an equitable classroom for educators and learners. The classroom can be a therapeutic landscape where educators and learners take part in deep learning and meaning making. In the fast-paced, high-stress, high-achieving environment of higher ed, that is compounded by demanding expectations and global challenges, a simple practice of meditation holds potential for authentic, sustainable pedagogies and contributions. In this session, participants will reflect on ideas related to the following questions: What makes a classroom equitable? How do we find purpose and meaning at the intersection of our personal and professional pursuits? How can the classroom be a place to generate both personal fulfilment and professional productivity? Why should we practice and model mindful meditation in higher education?
